Update on Nikki Stone

11/28/07 Update

~ NIKKI STONE'S FAMILY EXTENDS HEARTFELT THANK YOU ~

Saying "thank you" to everyone seems so inadequate for what everyone has done to support Nikki and her family. The communities support since Nikki's initial accident on July 28th has been overwhelming to say the least. Nevertheless, we would like to publicly thank everyone (by way of this article), for all that you have done. To the doctors, nurses and medical staff - thank you very, very much for keeping Nikki with us. You are all very special people. Whether you were a business who donated items to either of the two benefits - one held on September 23rd at the FOP Lodge or the one held on October 23rd at the Holton American Legion, whether you organized the various events (benefit dinners, pig raffle, car washes, t-shirt sales, etc.) or volunteered to help out at them, whether you personally donated items or money to help cover the expenses associated with her injury, whether you sent a card to express your concern, or whether you just said a prayer for Nikki's recovery - we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

It's very hard to explain the emotion we are going through since Nikki's accident. The stresses a family endures during times like this is unthinkable. It is very hard dealing with the "unknown" status of our daughter's recovery. At this time Nikki is still at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Nikki is making small progress, even though some of her actions are inconsistent, it's still progress. Nikki has a long, hard road ahead of her. We remain positive that she'll get there with the help of your continued prayers. We can't wait for the day until she is well enough to come home to us.

Thanks again to EVERYONE for everything you have done for us and especially for what you've done for Nikki.

10/15/2007 Update

Nikki was transferred back from Hackley Hospital to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital to resume therapy for her brain injury on October 2nd. She is still on heavy antibiotics for the infection(s). Her therapy includes sessions with a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist - normally six times a day. She is beginning to respond to the stimuli from the therapy sessions. Please continue to pray for her full recovery. Cards may be sent to:

9/24/2007 Update

September 19th Nikki was transferred back to Hackley Hospital (?) Intensive Care Unit from Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Center. She developed an infection and had surgery on September 20, which went well. Three tubes have been inserted into her head for drainage. She is currently in stable condition in ICU. Visitation is being limited to immediate family members only to minimize the risk of her obtaining any contagious diseases (colds, flu, etc.). It is estimated that she will be at Hackley 4-6 weeks before returning to Mary Free Bed to continue her therapy. Thanks again for all the support and prayers.

9/11/2007 Update

Nikki seemed a little stronger in her head/neck movements moving them a little more last night when I first got there. The trach is covered with a piece of gauze and clear tape and should heal from the inside out. Looks good not to have it sticking out her neck. They are also feeding her scheduled feedings directly into her stomach so the hanging feeding tube is gone. This allows her to eat more normally and not interfere w/ therapies. Other than that about the same.

9/6/2007 Update

New up date on Nikki stone, Nikki is healing more and more every day. She is starting to make very small responses when asked to do simple movements like move hear fingers etc. She was moved to Mary Free Bed, in Grand rapids, on September 5 to start some very intensive therapy.

All of your prayers are helping and being answered one by one. Nikki has a very long way to go, but every little movement and response is progress. Please keep praying for her.

Cards are welcome, please send them to:

8/16/2007 Update

Nikki is looking much better and off most of the machines. She is still on the Ventilator and feeding tube. Her eyes are part way open when she is awake, not yet following objects. The swelling in her head has gone down to about normal, and her heart rate goes up when you talk to her, so we think and hope she can hear us. We are all waiting for Nikki to wake up. Please keep the prayers coming. Thank you all so much for you help, prayers and thoughts.
