At Holton Public Schools, as our motto implies, we continue to root our school system within our community, while working to reach for excellence in all that we do. A strong emphasis is placed upon ensuring that the growth of our students academically, while preparing them for future success is a top priority. In order for this to occur, Holton Public Schools provides a comprehensive curriculum for students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade, while partnering with White Lake Area Community Education through our consortium partnership to offer specialized programs for Head Start, GSRP, and adult and alternative education services. In addition, through a seat time waiver granted by the Michigan Department of Education, our district is able to offer a comprehensive online schooling experience for students who desire this opportunity through our Virtual Academy program. Further, Holton Public Schools supports professional learning opportunities for all staff to stay current with educational initiatives in order to provide the best learning experiences for our students.

Parent’s Guide to the Common Core State Standards

In June 2010, the State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as the new standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics in grades K-12. These standards expanded upon Michigan's current standards, which are the Grade Level Content Expectations and the High School Content Expectations, by establishing clear and consistent goals for learning. The alignment of standards to the CCSS will allow Michigan to work collaboratively with other states to provide curricular support to schools and educators.

The links below provide access to documents called “parent roadmaps,” which are available in English Language Arts / Literacy, and Mathematics, and can be found in Spanish as well. These documents provide guidance to parents about what their children will be learning, and how they can support that learning in grades K-8. The “parent roadmaps" for each grade level also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year so that students will be college and career ready upon their graduation from high school.  English Language Arts and Literacy Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards in grades K–5 include expectations for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language applicable to a range of subjects, including but not limited to English Language Arts. The grade 6–12 standards are divided into two sections, one for English Language Arts and the other for history, social studies, science, and technical subjects. This division reflects the role of English Language Arts teachers in developing students’ literacy skills, while at the same time recognizing that teachers in other areas must have a role in this development as well.



Mathematics Common Core State Standards


The Common Core State Standards in mathematics are setup as grade level specific standards.  The goal of the CCSS mathematics standards is that all students must have the opportunity to learn and meet the same high standards if they are to access the knowledge and skills necessary in their post-school lives. The CCSS were designed to provide clear checkpoints along the way to the goal of college and career readiness for all students.


It is important to understand that the math standards will require a new level or rigor from our students.  The new standards will ask students to justify, why a particular mathematical statement is true, or where a mathematical rule comes from. There is difference between a student who can give a response to a question versus a student who can explain why an answer is correct or can explain in writing their thinking behind the solving of the problem.



Michigan Merit Curriculum

To prepare Michigan’s students with the knowledge and skills needed for the jobs in the 21st Century, the State of Michigan has enacted a rigorous set of statewide graduation requirements that are among the best in the nation. It is the hope that with these new graduation requirements, students will be well-prepared for future success in college and the workplace. The Michigan Merit Curriculum requires students entering 8th grade in 2006, to obtain a minimum of 16 credits for graduation, which could be met using alternative instructional delivery methods such as alternative course work, humanities course sequences, career and technology courses, industrial technology or vocational education courses, or through a combination of these programs. In addition, students entering the 3rd grade in 2006 (Class of 2016) will need to complete two credits of a language other than English in grades 9-12; or an equivalent learning experience in grades K-12 prior to graduation.
